Most visitors to the US Virgin Islands arrive on St Thomas and stay within sight of a cruise ship. The territory is wider than that, and several of its best places are run by the National Park Service rather than a resort.
Buck Island Reef National Monument sits off St Croix's northeast coast and was created by President Kennedy in 1961. It covers a 176-acre island and the reef around it, roughly 880 acres in total. The draw is underwater: an elkhorn coral barrier reef shelters more than 250 fish species, and a marked underwater trail with plaques identifying the fish lets beginners snorkel the grottoes. Visits are by boat from St Croix, for a half or full day.
Also on St Croix, Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve protects Taino archaeological sites and the only known landing of Christopher Columbus on what is now US territory. Visitors can kayak the mangroves and walk past the village remains. At night, guided clear-kayak tours go out onto the bioluminescent bay, where movement in the water makes glowing organisms light up. Divers can also reach Salt River Canyon, an underwater canyon with walls facing each other across about a quarter of a mile.
Close to Charlotte Amalie, Hassel Island is a 135-acre National Park Service property on the western edge of the harbour, a short boat ride from the waterfront. It preserves British and Danish fortifications and ruins, including the Garrison House, Prince Frederick's Battery and Cowell's Battery. Tours run through the St Thomas Historical Trust, and the island suits anyone who would rather walk among stone ruins than queue at a beach.
Water Island is the smallest of the four USVI islands, at under 500 acres, and a short ferry ride from St Thomas. It is a place for kayaking, hiking, cycling and quiet beaches, with Honeymoon Beach the best known. This is also the island where a $300 million-plus resort and marina was proposed in June 2026, covered in the developments article earlier in this series. For now, it remains small and unhurried.
On St John, much of the island is national park. The Reef Bay Trail runs about 2.2 miles through forest and past former sugarcane estates to a sugar mill near Genti Bay. Annaberg Sugar Plantation preserves a ruined sugar mill from the colonial era, and a hike of around a mile along the Leinster Bay Trail leads toward Waterlemon Cay, a small snorkelling island. Salt Pond Bay on the southeast coast has clear water and a rocky white-sand beach.
Each of these places is a reason to look beyond the most developed coasts. St Croix offers the reef and the historic parks, St John the trails and ruins, and Water Island a smaller, quieter alternative. A purchase decision that depends on a day-to-day lifestyle should be tested by spending a few days on each island, since a short ferry ride can change the pace of life more than the map suggests.
