307B Jolly Harbour, St Mary's, Antigua, WI

St Barts has a reputation built around Gustavia's boutiques, yachts and long lunches. Away from the harbour, the island is smaller, rockier and quieter than the reputation suggests, and most of its best places are reached on foot.
On the northwestern tip, Colombier is the beach most people mention first, partly because there is no road to it. It can be reached by boat or on foot, by a shorter, steeper path from Flamands or a longer, gentler one from Petite Anse. The Flamands route takes around 30 minutes. It is also the island's best-known snorkelling spot. A rental agency's blog says the beach is nicknamed "Rockefeller's Beach" after David Rockefeller, who once owned the land around it, a story that is widely repeated but not confirmed against a primary source.
On the south coast, Anse de Grande Saline sits behind salt pans and dunes, and the beach is reached by a short walk over the sand. There are no restaurants or services, so visitors bring their own water and food, and the beach is unprotected, so swimming conditions vary. Nude sunbathing is officially prohibited but, according to one agency guide, commonly practised toward one end.
Tucked next to Saline, Gouverneur is known for calm, shallow water that suits children and for snorkelling around the rocks on its northeastern side. On clear days, it looks out toward Saba, St Eustatius and St Kitts. One hiking guide describes a trail of about three miles there and back, with some scrambling near the end, so it suits people who do not mind a little effort.
Only a five-minute walk from Gustavia, Shell Beach is covered with tiny shells and looks across to Saba and Statia. A restaurant sits at one end, and it is a popular place to watch the sunset. A small hill above the beach carries the ruins of Fort Karl, which gives a view over Gustavia harbour. When the Bucket Regatta is on, local guides suggest watching from Shell Beach rather than the crowded harbour.
Away from the beaches, paths cross much of the island, from the easy Grand Fond coastal walk to harder routes. Corossol is described by one guide as offering a more authentic side of the island, and the Wall House Museum in Gustavia covers its history. Gustavia also stages a Mardi Gras carnival.
Properties near the quieter coves trade proximity to Gustavia for privacy and views. Walk the trails, and visit outside the peak winter season before deciding, since an island that feels lively in high season can look quite different at other times of year.
